FIFA World Cup doesn’t fail to startle us with all its Unpredictability. The same happened today in the match between South Korea and the defending champion squad Germany. Germany is out of the World Cup Tournament after losing to South Korea by 2-0. Yes you read it right!! We cannot be more amazed by this news. The match held at Kazan Arena in a sunny hot day. Who would have predicted at that time that Germany which entered the arena in its green shirts and white shorts will be crashed out of the world cup tournament by South Korea in their red shirts and black shorts?
Till 90 minutes the score remained 0-0. So an additional 6 minutes were provided. At 90 min+2, the corner reaches Kim Young-Gwon a few yards out. He controls and jabs the ball into the top corner! The flag’s up for offside. It has been disallowed. At 90 min +3 there was a VAR check and referee went to check the monitor as the ball came off a Germany player after a messy scramble. 90 min+4 the goal was given to South Korea and the score was 1-0. Heung-min Son scored the 2nd goal in 90 min+6. This was again a VAR Check. The score stands South Korea 2 and Germany 0. You know what does this mean? Germany is out of the first round which has never happened since 1938. Germany has never failed to make it out of the World Cup Group before.
It was a fair play for South Korea. They played with excellence and deserved this win. By this Germany become the fourth defending champions to exit at the group stage in last five years.
What struck us more? Germany’s lethargy from the beginning? Their lack of pace? Their inability to defend? Lack of proper tactics? We need to decipher this and it is going to take time. But for now Adios Germany. We are surely going to miss the defending Champions. Well played South Korea! VAR actually turned out to be lucky for South Korea and this is the first time FIFA is using VAR in the World Cup.
